Bryn Mawr College and the Fundación Tierra de Esperanza (https://www.tdesperanza.cl), a large non-profit in Chile, are collaborating to offer an international internship for two undergraduate students. The program will take place at the beautiful city of Concepción, known for its universities, music scene, and as a gateway for the Chilean Patagonia (https://www.lonelyplanet.com/chile/middle-chile/concepcion).

The two Bryn Mawr College undergraduate students participating in the Fundación Tierra de Esperanza Summer 2019 Pilot Program will work at the Fundación in order to gain work experiences and satisfy the requirements for course credit. The program will take place from May 27th through July 14th, 2019, and involve a week of pre-departure activities at Bryn Mawr College followed by six weeks in Concepcion, Chile.

Students will select an internship program within the Fundación Tierra de Esperanza to complete their work during their stay in Chile. Potential areas of participation during their internships: Protection of children rights, education, and substance abuse treatment. The students will be provided peer mentorship by graduate student partners, and internship supervision by the Fundación Tierra de Esperanza staff (including Julie Riese, MSS, GSSWSR 2017).

The focus of the internship work will be learning and applying program implementation and evaluation techniques in the context of prevention and intervention services for children and adolescents in Chile. Specifically, students will assist with the systematization of intervention practices (e.g., description, manualization) and program evaluation (e.g., data base development, data analysis) in their program of choice. These activities may include but are not limited to interviewing service-providers at the Fundación to collect service delivery anecdotal data, reviewing program manuals and materials, creating databases in Microsoft Excel and/or Access to systematize data collection and management, producing written and oral reports, conducting focus groups with clients, transcribing interviews and focus groups recordings using Microsoft Word, etc. Students will be encouraged to attend program service sessions (e.g., parenting classes, school visits), and to interact with colleagues. All these activities will take place within Fundación Tierra de Esperanza facilities in Concepción. Students will not participate in the delivery of clinical services, but will be allowed to observe group and family sessions.
