For nearly 100 years, the American Civil Liberties Union has been our nation’s guardian of liberty. We work in courts, legislatures, and communities to defend and preserve the civil rights and civil liberties that the Constitution and the laws of the United States guarantee everyone in this country. Whether it’s achieving full equality for LGBTQIA people, establishing new privacy protections for our digital age of widespread government surveillance, ending mass incarceration, or preserving the right to vote or the right to have an abortion, the ACLU takes up the toughest civil liberties cases and issues.

The ACLU of Pennsylvania is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization with 39,000 members and four offices across the state. Through organizing, advocacy, public education and litigation, we fight tirelessly to safeguard everyone’s rights in Pennsylvania.

The ACLU of Pennsylvania is seeking an intern in our Philadelphia office for 30 hours per week for 10 weeks of the summer. The intern will have the opportunity to gain broad experience in the areas of civil rights and civil liberties and work across two departments, legal intake and policy advocacy.

Specific responsibilities will include:

·      Interviewing callers to our legal intake hotline;

·      Writing summaries of civil rights complaints;

·      Researching facts about legal complaints and making recommendations;

·      Conducting outreach for “Know Your Rights” campaigns;

·      Staffing the ACLU-PA table at Pride and other community events;

·      Conducting research around reproductive freedom and LGBTQIA rights to inform policy advocacy campaigns; and

·      Supporting public education and constituent engagement around reproductive freedom and LGBTQIA rights issues.

We are seeking a current undergraduate with a commitment to and enthusiasm for civil rights and civil liberties. The applicant should have superior oral and written communication skills, strong analytical abilities, comfort talking with a diverse range of individuals, and the ability to work well independently and as part of a team. Fluency in Spanish is a plus.
